Looking Ahead to Draft Day

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – An eight-year streak of a California Baptist University Lancer being selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft will be put on the line again this week.
The MLB Draft begins with rounds one and two Monday at 4 p.m. PDT, with rounds three through 10 taking place Tuesday at 10 a.m. and the rest of the 40 rounds starting Wednesday at 9 a.m. There are several Lancers hoping to hear their name called at some point this week.
Pitchers Justin Montgomery and Dylan Stowell, a junior and senior, respectively, could very well see their names called this weekend. Montgomery entered the 2018 season ranked 97th in Baseball America's Top-100 MLB Draft Prospects for 2018.
A more recent draft ranking from PerfectGame.org (published last Wednesday) listed Montgomery 352nd overall in its top 500. The 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher split time between the starting rotation and bullpen, with 14 appearances and eight starts, this year and logged a 3.35 earned-run average. He limited his opposition to a .189 batting average and struck out 64 batters in 48.1 innings.
Stowell graduates as one of the best pitchers to ever wear a Lancer uniform, especially in the NCAA era (2014-18). The right hander's career numbers are impressive with his 1.98 ERA ranking second and first among pitchers who spent more than one season at CBU. His 191 strikeouts and 15 wins are the ninth most in program history, while both rank second in the NCAA era.
This season, Stowell earned NCAA Division II All-American honorable mention and was a three-time All-West Region selection this season. The redshirt senior solidified himself as the team's ace with a 6-2 record and 2.47 ERA over 14 appearances and 12 starts. He logged 95 strikeouts to 25 walks over 83.2 innings and maintained a 1.22 WHIP.
There is a rich draft history at CBU, with the Lancers poised to have a player drafted for the ninth year in a row this week. Thirty-one Lancers have been drafted over the past 36 years, with 20 players taken during Coach Gary Adcock's 14-year tenure.
Multiple CBU players have been drafted in three of the last five years. In 2016, a program-high four players were taken in the MLB Draft. Two years ago also gave the Lancers their highest-ever draft pick when Tyson Miller was taken in the fourth round at 134th overall by the Chicago Cubs.
This year, Trevor Oaks became the first former Lancer to make his MLB debut and has made two appearances for the Kansas City Royals so far. He is also one of four former CBU players to at least appear at the Triple-A level this season, with Adam Hofacket and Caleb Dirks currently at that level with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Atlanta Braves, respectively.
It is not uncommon to see a CBU senior taken on draft day, with Ryan Williams and Andrew Bernstein having potential to be senior signings this year.
Williams gave the Lancers a rare combination of speed and power over the last four years and was the only player in program history to log at least 30 home runs and stolen bases. The center fielder hit .300 and slugged .551 for his career, with 108 runs batted in, 118 runs scored, 32 homers and 33 stolen bases. In 2018, he batted .301, slugged .522 with 44 runs, 35 RBIs, 10 home runs and nine stolen bases.
Bernstein was sharp in his senior season, as he maintained a 3-0 record and 1.77 ERA over 11 appearances, nine starts and 45.2 innings. He held opposing offenses to a .233 batting average and compiled 45 strikeouts to 14 walks.
