MESA, AZ --- The Lancers have entered must-win territory, following a 5-3 loss to Tarleton State on Friday at the WAC Baseball Tournament. While the Texans have punched their ticket to Saturday's championship round, the Lancers will play again on Friday night in an effort to meet up with the Texans once again in Mesa.
CBU's next opponent will be either Utah Tech or Sacramento State. The two teams are currently playing at Hohokam Stadium to see which program will remain in the hunt for a WAC Championship.
Right-hander Bryan Peck was given the nod by head coach Gary Adcock. Peck, the reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week, allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out four. Cameron Teper was the first to get the call from the bullpen, and he responded with one run allowed over two innings. Luis Becerra allowed one run in his three innings of relief work.
The CBU bullpen has combined for 16 innings of work through two games in Mesa.
Tarleton struck first on Friday with a solo home run in the bottom of the second. They then tacked on two more runs in the third off a triple and a ground-rule double. CBU answered in the fourth when Bryce McFeely doubled to deep left center, scoring Connor Ross from first base.
The Texans got the run back in the bottom of the inning with their second solo shot of the day. CBU countered in the sixth with a Luis Ruiz RBI single, but in the eighth, the Texans again scored on their third solo blast of the day and second from Raphael Smeenk.
In their final fight, the Lancers posted a run in the top of the ninth when Ben Castelli singled home Matt Chavez. That brought the tying run to the plate with the top of the order due up, but CBU could not keep the line moving.
Nine Lancers combined for CBU's nine hits. Chavez and McFeely offered the only two extra-base knocks for the Lancers to start Friday. Sophomore Chris Ramirez finished 1-for-5, placing him one hit shy of the CBU all-time single-season hit record. Tarleton also finished the game with nine hits.
The Lancers' next game is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. The winner of Friday night's game will advance to the championship round, which begins on Saturday at 3 p.m. Tarleton State will have the winner's bracket advantage, needing only one win to clinch a championship.
