Battling on the Road

DAVIS, Calif. — After starting the season with two home victories, California Baptist University hit the road for a test at UC Davis Friday evening. The Lancers battled for 90 minutes, but ultimately fell 2-0 to the Aggies.
CBU drops to 2-1-0, while UC Davis improves to 1-2-0 on the year.
"I thought we were the better team today and it's disappointing not to walk away with three points," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We possessed the ball very well and created numerous scoring opportunities. We had two uncharacteristic misclearances on the defensive side of the ball which UCD, to their credit, capitalized on."
The Aggies got on the board first in the 14th minute of the game, taking advantage of a free kick deep in Lancer territory.
Just under 10 minutes later, Rebecca Romero gave CBU its first good look of the game with a shot on goal in the 23rd minute, but the Aggie goalkeeper managed to make the save.
The Lancers kept pushing, hoping for an equalizer before halftime, as Miranda Martinez fired off a shot on goal in the 33rd minute. Once again, however, the goalkeeper was able to step in front to keep the score 1-0 in favor of UC Davis at the break.
CBU started the second half strong, making a push in Aggie territory right away. Cora Jacoby drove a corner kick into the box, connecting with Desarae Felix's head, but the goalkeeper got her hands on it. Two minutes later, Jordan Dow put a shot on goal, but just couldn't quite find the back of the net.
UCD doubled its lead in the 73rd minute, making it 2-0 and putting some pressure on the Lancers. Time ran out before the Lancers could find the back of the net, however, resulting in the 2-0 loss.
"The difference came down to consistency and execution," said St. Clair. "Consistency of performance and the ability to put teams away when you have the opportunity to is critical at this level. We're a young team so this will be a good learning experience for us as we head into training this week and prepare for Houston."
CBU returns home to host the University of Houston next Friday, August 31, at 3:00 p.m.
