BREA, Calif. — Coming off a banner year in its NCAA Division II finale, where it won the West Region and took third at nationals, California Baptist University had a solid Division I debut at the Mark Covert Invitational Saturday morning. The Lancer had four runners in the top-15 and took second as a team.
CBU tallied 57 points, just one point behind top-finisher Cal Poly (56), which was the Big West Conference Runner-Up last year. Arizona State took third with 68 team points.
"The women showed a lot of promise today," said Coach Adam Tribble. " We got a little scattered during the course of the race – the plan was to keep the girls together – but for the first race, the women had good efforts on tired legs. Once we get our ducks in a row and girls can get in the right spot, the women's team could be pretty exciting."
Freshman Anna Mate had a terrific collegiate debut, taking third overall. She clocked in at 17 minutes, 52.5 seconds and was with the two front-runners until the end. Anett Somogyi wasn't far behind Mate, taking fourth place with a time of 17:54.0.
Chloe Sharp and Lara Orrock – both freshmen – rounded out the top-15 for CBU as Sharp took eighth with a time of 17:57.7 and Orrock came in 15th after clocking in at 18:08.6 in the 6K.
Fruzsi Ladanyi rounded out the Lancer top-five runners with a time of 18:31.3, which was good for a 27th place finish.
Karolina Iznerowicz (18:34.6, 31st), Emilie Renaud (18:40.4, 35th), Maria Paula Guerrero (18:42.2, 39th), Natalia Novak (19:37.0, 81st), and Mary Andrews (19:55.4, 97th) rounded out the Lancer runners for the morning. Like Mate, Sharp and Orrock, Iznerowicz, Renaud, Guerrero and Andrews also made their collegiate debuts today.
CBU looks to build off a successful debut as it heads to the UC Riverside Invitational on September 15.
