RICHMOND, Ky. – Even with rainy and windy conditions, California Baptist University saved its best for last in the third round of the Eastern Kentucky Raising Cane's Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The Lancers shot a team-best 286 on the day to move three spots up the leaderboard to a tie for seventh place in their season and NCAA Division I opener. CBU accumulated an 871 over three rounds this week (287-298-286) to finish less than 10 strokes off a top-three finish.
Eastern Michigan won the tournament with an 838, while host Eastern Kentucky came in second (848) and Morehead State's 862 was good for third. Eastern Kentucky's Billy Basham and Kyle Slattery of SIU Edwardsville tied for medalist honors this week with 205s.
Weather and time change were challenges for CBU, the only West Coast team in attendance, as the 15-team field got off to a 5:30 a.m. PDT shotgun start on Sunday. This week served as a good measuring stick for the Lancers, who matched up against some of the top teams from several D-I conferences around the country.
Top-three teams this weekend, Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State, took a respective second and third in the Ohio Valley Conference last year. Cleveland State finished ninth this weekend behind CBU (872) after it won the 2018 Horizon League crown to advance to the NCAA Regional round last year. Fourteenth-place DePaul (888) is coming off a third-place performance in the Big East Conference last season.
Ben Hallam led CBU on Sunday with a one-under-par 69. The Lancers' lone senior had five birdies in his round and finished strong by going three-under on his last nine holes. He was responsible for the biggest move up the individual leaderboard on Sunday, as he jumped 24 spots up for a tie for 29th place with a 218 (75-74-69).
Ryan Monsalve came in with a one-over 71 that was powered by two birdies. Jack Solis and Harrison Kingsley both carded 73s on Sunday. Kingsley was aided by an eagle on the par-four 17th hole, while Solis accumulated three birdies on his 18 holes.
After leading the Lancers in the first two rounds, true freshman Justin Cross continued to impress in his first collegiate tournament and gave CBU a solid drop score of 76 that included two birdies. Cross tied with Hallam for 29th with his 218 (70-72-76).
Both Monsalve (73-76-71) and Kingsley (71-76-73) tied for 40th with 220s, while Solis took 64th with a 225 (73-79-73).
