ERIE, Colo. – A trip to the Mark Simpson Colorado Invite created several intriguing matchups for California Baptist University this week, with regional and Western Athletic Conference teams, including top teams from several other NCAA Division I conferences.
The Lancers put themselves in good position for a solid finish to the 54-hole tournament after putting themselves in sixth place out of 16 teams after two rounds on Monday. CBU logged an impressive even-par 288 to start Monday and then shot 16-over 304 in the second for a 36-hole total of 592 at the Colorado National Golf Club. Tuesday's third and final round can be followed live on Golfstat.
Senior Ben Hallam led the Lancers with an even-par 144 (71-73) on Monday. He goes into Tuesday in a tie for sixth place in the 95-player field.
CBU finds itself in the top half of an impressive group of teams at the Mark Simpson Invite, with room to move up Tuesday. There are two Pac-12 teams in Colorado and Utah. The host Buffs finished runner-up in the Pac-12 and were tabbed the seventh seed at the NCAA Stockton Regional last year and lead the tournament with a 568. Utah is in second with a 571.
There are a number of intriguing Southern California matchups this week, too, with Cal State Fullerton just 10 strokes in front of the Lancers in third place (582). CBU does lead crosstown foe UC Riverside (598, ninth) and CSUN (611, 14th) in the standings.
The Lancers are also getting an early look at two Western Athletic Conference opponents, Grand Canyon and Utah Valley, and proving themselves nicely. Grand Canyon is just four strokes ahead of CBU in fifth (588) after taking second place in the conference last year, and the Lancers lead a Utah Valley team (597, eighth) that took third in the WAC in 2018 by five shots.
Three players finished the first 18 holes under par for CBU, with Justin Cross and Ryan Monsalve both shooting two-under 70 and Hallam turning in a 71. All three birdied three times in the first round. Cross started round one with two birdies, while Monsalve and Hallam both finished strong with two birdies in each of their final five holes.
True freshmen Harrison Kingsley scored in both rounds for CBU, with a 77 to start things off and then a four-stroke improvement for a 73 over the final 18 for a 150 total. Hallam matched Kingsley for a team-best 73 in the second round, while Monsalve also scored in both rounds with a 76 in the second for a 146 total (70-76).
Monsalve is in a tie for 17th with a 146 total, while Kingsley is tied for 40th. Cross provided CBU's final score in round two with an 82 and takes a 152 that has him in 54th place going into Tuesday.
Seven other teams in Colorado were top-five teams in their conferences last season. Northern Colorado (610, 13th) and Southern Utah (14th, 611) finished one and two in the Big Sky Conference in 2018. Cal State Fullerton, Houston Baptist (586, fourth) and Wyoming (593, seventh) all took fifth in the Big West, Southland and Mountain West conferences a season ago. Stephen F. Austin (622, 16th) also took third in the Southland Conference, as well.
