ERIE, Colo. – California Baptist University claimed several impressive head-to-head wins while taking eighth place at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational on Tuesday.
For the second week in a row, the Lancers were challenged with wet and windy conditions but improved nine strokes from rounds two to three to shoot five-over-par 293 on Tuesday, which secured them eighth place with an 885 (288-304-293). Colorado won its event with an 850, while fellow Pac-12 school Utah took second (852), Cal State Fullerton third (865) and Wyoming fourth (868).
CBU was just seven shots off fifth place and Grand Canyon (878), which went runner-up at the 2018 Western Athletic Conference Championships.
Ryan Monsalve and Ben Hallam both led the Lancers by tying for 18th individually this week. Monsalve shot even-par 72 in the final round to complete his 218 (70-76-72), while Hallam carded a 74 on Tuesday to finalize his 218 (71-73-74).
Freshmen Harrison Kingsley and John Hayes both shot tournament bests of 73 and 74, respectively, to score for CBU in the third and final round.
"Finishing in the middle of the pack wasn't what we came up here to do, but I saw some great things from the team this week," Coach TL Brown said.
"We started out strong and rallied back this week and this afternoon. We started out poorly today and were 11 over at one point and rallied back to finish five over."
The Lancers did post wins over the defending Big Sky Conference champions, Northern Colorado (889, ninth); WAC opponent Utah Valley (890, 10th); Gonzaga (895, 11th); UC Riverside (903, 14th) and CSUN (916, 16th) to just name a few.
"We battled right with Grand Canyon, and it was nice to get out there and play with UC Riverside and Utah Valley," Brown said.
Monsalve birdied five times on Tuesday and finished with three birdies over his final four holes. Hallam birdied just once to record his 74, but did play his final five holes one-under par.
"I am really proud of Ryan and Ben, they both got off to tough starts, but battled back to finish strong today," Brown said.
Kingsley and Hayes both used two birdies to shoot their respective 73 and 74 in the third round. In the individual standings, Kingsley took 38th with a 223 (77-73-73), while Justin Cross took 81st (232, 70-82-80). Hayes placed 94th in his collegiate debut after shooting 241 overall (81-86-74).
"It was nice to see John rebound this week and shoot 74 today, and it was good to see Justin come out and shoot that 70 in round one," Brown said. "I knew the freshmen would get in the lineup this year. They aren't here to ride the pine, and the more they compete the more savvy they will get. It just takes time."
The Lancers take a week off before heading to a WAC-hosted tournament, NM State's Herb Wimberly Invitational Oct. 15-16. It is CBU's second to last event before it takes its mid-season hiatus.
"We have a little down time now to work on our game, and I am really excited about that," said Brown, who wants to work on par-five holes, wedge play and overcoming challenging conditions in practice. "We have done some nice things, we just have to put it all together."
