Lancers Battle Delta Devilettes in Draw

ITTA BENA, Miss. — While it was hitting triple digits back home in Riverside, California Baptist University was battling it out in pouring rain at Mississippi Valley State Saturday evening. The Lancers went into extra time with the Delta Devilettes, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
CBU sits 4-1-1 on the year, while MVSU moves to 1-4-1 overall.
"We generated a lot of great attacking opportunities," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Their goalkeeper came up with fantastic saves. We were all over them."
Both teams had chances in the opening five minutes of the game, but went into halftime still in a scoreless draw.
Desarae Felix gave the Lancers their first good look of the night in the fifth minute, but the MVSU goalkeeper stepped in front to keep the visitors off the board. Less than four minutes later, Jordan Dow put a shot on goal, forcing the goalkeeper to push it wide.
The Devilettes created some opportunities of their own, but Romy Salvador easily kept her team in the game with three saves in the first 15 minutes.
Felix scored the lone goal for the Lancers, putting away a through-ball pass from Valerie Cortez into the far corner of the net in the 71st minute.
"Desarae had a great goal," said St. Clair. "We had a lot of chances that almost went in."
CBU looked like it would get some insurance on multiple occasions, but an MVSU defender scrambled to clear the shot off the line each time to keep the one-goal deficit in play.
In the last 10 minutes of regulation, however, MVSU equalized, taking advantage of a weird bounce in the mud. Laadi Issaka – who played for the Ghana national team in the World Cup – ripped a shot into the upper far post corner to tie the game 1-1.
"Romy really didn't have a chance," said St. Clair. "It was a crazy angled shot and to her credit, she buried it."
CBU returns home to host Southern Utah on September 16, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
"We scheduled these games on the road to prepare us for conference and continue to get better," said St. Clair. "Playing on road and in adverse conditions is a learned skill. This was a great opportunity for us to do that. We need to learn to close out a game, but overall, this trip was successful. We got better and these games will prepare us for conference. Now, it's time to focus on the next opponent."
