SEATTLE – Late runs in all three sets and scrappy play throughout powered California Baptist University to its first Western Athletic Conference sweep of the season at Seattle U on Monday night.
All three games were close, with the Lancers pulling out all three on scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 at the Redhawk Center. It gives CBU three wins in its last five matches, as it improves to 9-10 and 3-3 in WAC, while Seattle drops to 10-11, 1-6.
The Lancers hit .279 on the night, with 41 kills and 12 errors on 104 attacks. Hana Okuhara (21 assists) and Natalie Zimmerer (13 assists, four digs) were both great while splitting time at setter, while four players had at least six kills for CBU.
Sydney Marks had a team-high 11 kills on a .348 percentage, while Cassidy Dennison was one off with 10 at a .304 clip. Dennison nearly had a double-double, with eight digs and two blocks, as well. Christine Graf (four digs) and Megan Sester each had six kills and two blocks.
Conversely, CBU held the Redhawks to a .197 hitting percentage, thanks to tough serves that took them out of system and a scrappy defense. The Lancers had a 7-5 advantage in blocks, with Yagoda's Jedrzejczak four leading the way.
Nicole Abreu also had a match-high 15 digs, while Elizabeth Gilley and Dennison each finished with eight. Abreu also had a team-high three aces.
CBU used a 7-1 run, highlighted by an Ellie Voss kill and Okuhara ace, to take a 19-14 lead en route to a 25-19 win in the first set.
The Lancers trailed the Redhawks 19-16 in set two, but closed out the game on an 8-1 run. Jedrzejczak tallied three of those points, including the final two on block assists. Dennison, Okuhara and Marks also had kills in that run, while Abreu added her third ace.
Set three was a photo finish, but CBU used a match-clinching 6-4 run to break a 19-19 tie. A 3-1 run gave CBU a 22-20 edge, and the Lancers would not give up back-to-back points the rest of the way. Marks killed the final two points to secure the sweep.
The Lancers play their next two matches at home. They welcome Grand Canyon on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match before hosting CSU Bakersfield in the CBU Events Center on Monday at 7 p.m.
