Lancers Win Big In Front of Record Crowd

RIVERSIDE – A record crowd of 3,418 came out for California Baptist University's second match in the CBU Events Center.
The Lancers did not disappoint and pulled out a five-set win (25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 10-25, 15-12) over CSU Bakersfield in what was a historic match in several ways. It set a new attendance record not only for the Lancers but for a Western Athletic Conference match this season.
"It was unbelievable, last year's atmosphere was incredible and this was even better," Coach Branden Higa said of the crowd. "They brought it with us all night and we absolutely won points because of them. I can't wait to do it again."
Almost a year ago exactly, CBU defeated UC Riverside in its first Events Center match on October 23, 2018. The Lancers set an attendance record with 2,768 fans in the building that year only to have it shattered on Monday.
It was also the second match in a row and fourth time in the last six outings CBU has played a deciding set.
A 6-0 fifth-set run helped CBU finally pull away from CSUB. It gave the Lancers an 11-7 lead in the deciding game, but CSUB charged right back to force a 12-12 tie.
A huge kill from Christine Graf gave CBU the lead again, 13-12, and a ball-handling error handed the Lancers match point. A big-time combo block from Graf and Yagoda Jedrzejczak then sealed the deal and sent the packed Events Center into a frenzy.
"That was just a gutsy, gritty win. It was just a rollercoaster of a match where we felt like we dominated quite a bit, but the script was flipped in the fourth set," Higa said. "For us to come back and have the toughness and grittiness to get it together and win that fifth was just unbelievable. It was just a tremendous win, all heart by our team."
Nicole Abreu led CBU's defense, which held CSUB to a .172 hitting percentage, with 27 digs.
Ellie Voss put together a career night to lead the offense with a career-and-team-high 14 kills on a .375 percentage (14-2-32). Voss also had a match-high six blocks to lead CBU to 10 in the match.
Natalie Zimmerer and Cassidy Dennison both pieced together double-doubles. Zimmerer did so with 44 assists, 12 digs and four kills, while Dennison had 11 kills and 16 digs. Graf ranked second with 12 kills for CBU.
Needing 18 coming in, Zimmerer eclipsed 2,000 assists for her career on Monday. She became just the seventh Lancer to reach 2,000 assists and only the third in the NCAA era (2013-19).
"My roles have changed each year," Zimmerer said. "I feel like these past two years I have really developed as a leader. It has been fun having a different role each year, and getting that 2,000th assist."
CBU's victory helped it improve to 10-11 and 4-4 in Western Athletic Conference play on Monday night, while the Roadrunners dropped to 7-13, 2-6.
The Roadrunners have been a Western Athletic Conference power since joining in 2013. They won the conference tournament in 2014 and 2017, and logged top-three finishes in their first five seasons as a member (2013-17), including three runner-up performances.
It was a full team effort to take down Bakersfield. Jedrzejczak finished with seven kills and four blocks. Elizabeth Gilley had 10 digs, while Sydney Marks also had seven kills.
Monday finished the first half of the WAC season for CBU. The Lancers have rematches at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and New Mexico State on Saturday and Monday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific, respectively.
