KANSAS CITY --- California Baptist University's win streak of three in a row came to a close on Sunday, as the Lancers dropped a heartbreaker to Kansas City, 1-0.
The difference came in the 99th minute after Lindsey Prokop fired a shot into the box that deflected off two players before finding the back of the net.
"This result stings, to have a game-winning goal cleared off the line at the last second and then lose in overtime on a deflection resulting in an own goal is tough," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "It's always difficult to earn points on the road. However, it's particularly difficult when it's at the end of the season and every team is fighting for the postseason." Obviously, this is not how we would have liked to finish conference play, but I'm very proud of the team for their resolve and hart today."
The Lancers entered the contest as the top team in the Western Athletic Conference at 13-3-1 and 6-1-0 record. With the loss, the Lancers are still on top, as they were the first team to reach 18 points. Seattle U is in second with 16 points, while Utah Valley is in third with 15 points.
Both Seattle U and Utah Valley play each other to end the conference schedule. A win for Seattle U would give the Redhawks the outright WAC title. If UVU wins, the Wolverines and the Lancers will share the WAC title as co-champions. If the Redhawks and the Wolverines end their game in a tie, the Lancers would claim the outright lead for the WAC title.
Rola Badawiya and Karley Weeks led the offensive front for the Lancers, as the pair finished with a team-high four shots apiece.
Romy Salvador faced 15 shots on the day, but only five were on target as she grabbed four saves.
"Overall, we've had a fantastic second season in DI and in WAC play," added St. Clair. "We have one game left next weekend, and we will head home rest up and being preparations for Southern Illinois."
CBU will end its season with a nonconference match against Southern Illinois on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 4 p.m.
