RIVERSIDE -- Freshman Taylor Wu set multiple records during California Baptist University's 103-75 victory over Ottawa University (AZ) at home. The Lancers' 3-0 record is their best start to a season since going 4-0 to open the 2015-16 season.
Wu scored 37 points in just 28 minutes of work, setting a new freshman scoring record for CBU in the NCAA era. She also drained 10 three-pointers on her way to that mark, a new all-time CBU record. It eclipsed the previous mark set by Kamille Diaz (9) against the Academy of Art on March 4, 2016.
Wu's scoring mark also places her tied for 10th all-time in CBU history. But her night was not only offense, as she also nabbed seven steals.
Coming into the night, the highest amount of three-pointers made in an NCAA Division I game was nine by a player from Loyola Chicago, potentially giving Wu the single game mark early in the year.
Head Coach Jarrod Olson wasn't caught off guard by Wu's monster night.
"Taylor is a really exciting player and I'm not surprised that she was able to have this kind of game," Olson said. "She's really explosive and can make a lot of things happen. Hopefully this is just the beginning of something really good for her."
The game was close early, with Ottawa leading 15-8 with just under six minutes left in the first quarter, but the Lancers would spend the rest of the quarter outscoring the Spirit 32-7 to have a comfortable lead between quarters.
The result was essentially in hand after the defense of CBU tightened up in the second quarter and held Ottawa's shooting efforts to just 2-21 (.095 percent) from the field.
Only Wu's historic night could have stolen attention from Caitlyn Harper recording such an efficient double-double. In just 18 minutes, Harper scored 21 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and had a field goal percentage of 81.8 (9-11), all while extending her perfect free throw shooting to three games, going 2-for-2 from the line.
Sydney Palma sniffed a double-double, with nine points and nine assists. Six of those assists ended up being three-pointers by Wu (4), Tiena Afu (1), and Tiena Neale (1).
Lexy Ram led all CBU starters with 19 minutes played and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.
The team as a whole tallied 30 assists to just 16 turnovers. It's a stat Coach Olson hopes to make the norm.
"Thirty assists as a team is a huge number," Olson said. "It's it's a lot more fun to watch and play when you do that."
The Lancers will host the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M on Saturday morning, tip-off for the weekend game is set for 11:00 a.m.
