Lancers End Season Against SIU

CARBONDALE --- California Baptist University's women's soccer team closed out its 2019 season with a non-conference match against the Salukis of Southern Illinois on Saturday.
The Salukis were able to secure three first-half goals to take the 3-1 match. With the loss, the Lancers end their 2019 season at 13-5-1. SIU improves to 5-10-2 overall.
"This game was a tale of two halves," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "I'm disappointed with our first-half performance. We were not disciplined or executing well enough in areas of the game that we can control. To be fair, some of that attributed to injuries finally catching up with us after an arduous run for the WAC regular-season championship. In the second half, I was very pleased to see that our grit and resolve went into overdrive, and we completely took the game to our opponent. Our seniors did a great job leading this charge. We created numerous, dangerous scoring opportunities and shut down their attack. Unfortunately, we ran out of time. At this level, the margins are small and demand consistent performances for 90 minutes, not 45."
Liz Brechtel led SIU on the day, scoring all three goals for the Salukis.
Rola Badawiya was able to put the Lancers on the board in the 61st minute. Badawiya finishes the season with a team-high 11 goals and three assists for 25 points. She currently leads the conference in goals (11) and is second in points.
With another chapter closed in the women's soccer program, the 2019 team made a dent in the CBU record books.
The Lancers allowed 18 goals on the season, which is tied for ninth all-time in fewest goals allowed in a single-season. The team also recorded nine shutouts on the season – good enough for fifth all-time in a single-season.
The Lancers finished the season with an NCAA Division I program-best 13 wins and closed out the Western Athletic Conference with a program-best 6-2-0 record.
Badawiya also made her mark in the record book after her first season with the Lancers, as the junior moved to third all-time in consecutive games with a goal (5) and consecutive games with a point (6). True freshman Abigail Tyhurst recorded 10 saves against Cal Poly on Sept. 22 to ink her name at eighth all-time in goalkeeper saves in a single-game.
After being picked to finish tied for seventh in the preseason WAC coaches' poll, the Lancers sit atop the standings as the first team to reach six wins and 18 points. Seattle U is in second at 5-1-1, and Utah Valley is in third at 5-2-0. Seattle U and Utah Valley play each other tonight with a WAC regular-season title on the line for all three teams.
"Obviously, this is not how we wanted to end our season," added St. Clair. "However, I am incredibly proud of this team's grit, class, execution, and body of work this season. Originally picked to finish tied for seventh out of nine teams in the preseason and then work our way to within 12 minutes of the WAC regular-season championship in our second year of NCAA DI is very impressive."
A win for Seattle U would give the Redhawks the outright WAC title. If UVU wins, the Wolverines and the Lancers will share the WAC title as co-champions. If the Redhawks and the Wolverines end their game in a tie, the Lancers would claim the outright lead for the WAC title.
The Redhawks and the Wolverines face each other on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m.
