BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Four top-six finishes, including a championship run from AJ Raya, highlighted California Baptist University's day at CSU Bakersfield's Roadrunner Open.
The Lancers got top-six finishes from Arick Lopez, Zach Schrader and Garrett Strang, as well, in their first taste of tournament action this year on Sunday. CBU takes next week off before heading to the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 15.
Raya went a perfect 5-0 on Sunday. The 149-pounder won his first match with a pin in four minutes against Menlo's Joshua Arrieta, and then pulled out decision wins over Columbia's Andrew Garr (4-3), San Francisco State's Jeremy Huang (10-3) and CSU Bakersfield's Russell Rohlfing (4-2) to reach the championship round. Raya did it again in the final match, as he defeated Fresno State's Greg Gaxiola 4-3 thanks to a reversal 42 seconds into the third period.
Lopez advanced to the 197-pound championship semifinals with wins in his first two matches. He defeated Fresno State's Isaiah Perez 9-2 and pinned Arizona State's Jacob Good with four seconds left in the first period. Lopez lost to the top seed from Stanford, but earned a 7-5 decision over Columbia's Sam Wustefeld to reach the third-place match before ultimately taking fourth.
Schrader started his day with a pin with 10 seconds left in the first period, but then dropped a close 5-2 decision to top-seeded AJ Nevills from Fresno State. Schrader won his next four matches, with three more pins and a technical fall before ultimately settling for a top-five finish.
Strang started his day with a first-period pin of Grand Canyon's Brody Thompson, but then dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Fresno State's Hunter Cruz. He won his next two matches against CSU Bakersfield's Mark Cardwell (16-12) and Columbia's Mike Baker (11-7) to secure sixth place in his bracket.
CBU also got two wins from Jacob Cooper and Dilan Atjun and one each from Christian Nunez, Lorenzo De La Cruz and Chaz Hallmark.
