CBU Wins Third-Straight on Senior Day

RIVERSIDE – Five seniors accounted for 11 points to lead California Baptist University to a 13-7 win over Redlands on Senior Night Saturday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
CBU ends the regular season on a three-game winning streak, as it improves to 15-14 going into the 2019 Western Water Polo Association Championships, which the Lancers will host for the first time Nov. 22-24 in Riverside. CBU is seeded fourth for the WWPA Tournament, and will face fifth-seeded Concordia in the first round on Nov. 22.
Ten Lancers scored in the win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Junior Joseph Galgani led the way with three goals and an assist, while sophomore Hunter Barnett had three assists, a goal and two steals.
Galgani extended his point and goal streaks to 23 and 14 games, respectively. He's also had a goal and an assist in the last 13 games.
All five seniors: Kyle Christian, Kyle Johnson, Matt Diacono, Logan Mena and Christian Britton notched points in the game. Christian had two assists, while Johnson had a goal and an assist. Diacono scored twice and had two steals, and Mena also had a goal, two drawn ejections and a steal. Britton tallied three assists and a goal, as well.
Sophomore Riley Bumgardner added three assists, a goal and a steal, and back on defense Gabe Thorne had 10 saves in 24 minutes.
CBU opened the game on a 4-0 run in the first seven minutes, as it scored one easy counterattack goal after another. Britton, Diacono, Barnett and Galgani scored first for the Lancers.
Redlands managed to make things interesting with a 3-0 run to pull within 4-3 with 4:47 left in the first half. The Lancers responded and put the game away with a 6-0 run that stretched into the third quarter. Zach Lowery, Mena, Johnson, Galgani and Bumgardner all scored in the run.
All five seniors were honored before the game on Saturday. Over the last four years, they have led CBU to an 80-51 record, 19 top-20 wins, including three top-10 wins, and a program-best No. 11 ranking.
Each seniors has put up historic numbers. Diacono ranks fourth in CBU's NCAA era with 70 drawn ejections. Christian's 69 assists are the sixth most in the team's NCAA era. Johnson ranks fourth in field blocks (22) and eighth in steals (73) in the NCAA era.
Britton's 136 assists rank third in CBU's all-time history, while his 38 multi-assist games and 23 games with a goal, assist and steal both rank fourth and fifth all-time, respectively.
Mena ranks first in CBU history with 290 drawn ejections, which are more than 200 than the Lancer with the second most. His 97 drawn ejections in 2018 are nine more than any other Lancer has had in the NCAA era.
