RIVERSIDE -- California Baptist University defeated the CSUN Matadors 64-56 to improve to 2-0 on the young season on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers' victory came on the back of Lexy Ram's 13-point, 13-rebound double-double in the CBU Events Center. It was her third career double-double, and a new career high in rebounds for the senior.
The Lancers led early and often, taking a lead with 2:22 left in the first quarter they would never relinquish. Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm, with the Lancers shooting just .344 percent from the field, and the Matadors checking in with a .284 percentage.
The Matadors did make a run in the fourth quarter that threatened the Lancer lead, which at one point was down to two points with four-and-a-half to play. Ram and Caitlyn Harper then combined to go on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to put the Lancers back up by 11.
"It was a really scrappy win for us, CSUN made the game tough for us today. It was nice to see players step up when we needed them," Head Coach Jarrod Olson said. "Harper had a nice post game today, Sydney Palma made some big plays throughout the game, and Tiena Afu's rebounds were a big factor, as well. It was nice to see us maybe not play our best game, but still come together to make plays and get the win in the end."
CBU is typically a solid three-point shooting team, but CSUN's defense held the Lancers to just .160 percent shooting from beyond the arc today. For the second game in a row, the Lancers free-throw shooting came up big, with the team shooting .727 percent from the charity stripe, but hitting the final six in a row as CSUN attempted its final comeback push.
Sydney Palma (12 points and five assists) and Tiena Afu (seven points, 11 rebounds) came up big off the bench for the second game in row. Harper finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds. Georgia Dale just missed out on her first career double-double, scoring nine points, grabbing nine boards and dropping four dimes in the process. The nine rebounds are a new career high for Dale.
The Lancers will be back in action on Wednesday when they host the Ottawa Spirit at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the CBU Events Center.
