O'Donell, Ramirez Lead CBU to Win

TEMPE, Ariz. – Brilliant performances from Kira O'Donell and Grace Ramirez made for a successful first at Arizona State's Cross Conference Challenge on Saturday. The 24th-ranked Lancers defeated Iona 9-7 to end the day after battling No. 10 UC Santa Barbara 12-6, despite being without one of their senior starters.
O'Donell had a hat trick in both games and finished with seven points (six goals, one assist) and five drawn ejections on the day. Ramirez logged 41 saves for a 53.7 save percentage in the cage.
CBU moves to 3-5 this season, with all five losses coming against teams currently ranked in the NCAA's top 10. UC Santa Barbara improves to 7-1 this year, while the Gaels, who are receiving votes in the most recent NCAA poll, move to 1-3.
The Lancers will face Cal State Monterey Bay and seventh-ranked Arizona State on Sunday at 8:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. PDT to end the Cross Conference Challenge.
Both games were close in the first half on Saturday, as CBU and the Gauchos were tied at 4-4 with 1:30 left in the second quarter. UCSB scored twice in the final 1:13 of the first half and then controlled the third quarter to secure the win. The Lancers did manage to improve upon their 14-4 loss to the Gauchos to start the year.
O'Donell had three goals, four drawn ejections and a steal versus UC Santa Barbara, while Ramirez had seven saves and six steals. Katie Fugit and Jamie Hutton both had a goal and assist in the game, as well.
CBU took a 3-1 lead about three minutes into the game with Iona after two goals from O'Donell and one from Hutton. Madison Gonzales scored with 1:45 left to give the Lancers a 4-3 edge going into the second quarter.
The Lancers pushed their lead to 7-5 at halftime after goals from Morgan Baker and Krista Krantz in the final 45 seconds of the half. Both defenses played tight over the final 16 minutes.
Iona managed to make it a one-goal deficit, 8-7, going into the fourth quarter, but CBU would not give up a goal the rest of the way. Hutton scored her second goal with 6:56 to play for a bit of insurance for the Lancers.
