HOUSTON – A surging California Baptist University took fifth place at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational on Tuesday.
One can only wonder what if, as the Lancers finished just four shots off the eventual champion, Florida Gulf Coast, after the tournament was ended after 36 holes. The Colin Montgomerie Invitational was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but lightning in the area forced the event to an early end after round two.
Despite the inclement weather, CBU shot six-over-par 582 (295-287) and had four golfers finish in the top-22 of the individual standings. Florida Gulf Coast won with a 578, while Houston and North Dakota State tied for second (580) and Prairie View A&M took third (581) at Augusta Pines. CBU's 287 tied with PVAMU for the best score in round two.
Ben Hallam tied for ninth place in the 88-player field by finishing with an even-par 144 (74-70) after shooting two-under 70 in the second round. Stetson's Baylor Payne won the individual title with a 141.
Harrison Kingsley secured his best-ever individual finish by tying for 13th at one-over-par 145 (69-76). John Hayes tied for 18th with a 146 (77-69) and Ryan Monsalve carded a 147 (75-72) to take 22nd.
Connor Benjamin recorded the best round of his young career, as the true freshman shot 76 in round two. It gave him a 156 total (80-76).
The Lancers have four regular-season tournaments left, and will head to the Sacramento State Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
