ELK GROVE, Calif. – For the third week in a row, California Baptist University secured a top-five tournament finish, with Harrison Kinglsey leading the team by taking second place individually at the Sacramento State Invitational on Tuesday.
The Lancers were responsible for one of three par-or-better rounds Tuesday, shooting even-par 288 over their final 18 holes. They shot just two-over 866 (284-294-288) on the week to take fourth place out of 15 teams, which tied for CBU's best finish of the season.
CBU's 866 tied for the ninth-best 54-hole score in team history. Cal State Fullerton won the event with an 847, while Long Beach State (854) and Grand Canyon (855) rounded out the top three. The Lancers locked up head-to-head wins over Pacific, Fresno State, Weber State, UC Santa Barbara, defending Big West Conference champion UC Irvine, Sacramento State, Cal Poly, Seattle U of the Western Athletic Conference and others.
A four-spot jump from Monday to Tuesday for CBU came thanks in large part to the true freshman Kingsley and senior Ben Hallam. Kingsley shot nine-under-par 207 on the week (68-71-78) after going four-under for the second time in the third round. Jack Dyer of Cal State Fullerton edged Kingsley out for medalist honors by just one stroke (206).
Hallam shot three-under 69 on Tuesday to climb 11 spots up the leaderboard for a 213 (68-76-69) and 11th-place finish.
The Lancers' two other scorers, Ryan Monsalve and John Hayes, came in at 74 and 77, respectively, in the third round. Monsalve was the perfect picture of consistency and took 57th with a 224 (75-75-74) as a result. Hayes finished in 67th with a 227 (73-77-77).
Dan Heron was a big part of CBU's success, as the sophomore was the team's second scorer in round two. He finished those 18 holes even-par 72 and eventually took 77th with a 231 (79-72-80).
The Olympic Club Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of San Francisco, will be CBU's fourth-straight tournament next Monday and Tuesday. The Lancers will look to see if they can keep their streak of top-five finishes going.
