Lancers Lock In For WAC Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – All three phases came together and led California Baptist University to a Western Athletic Conference series opening 4-1 win over CSU Bakersfield on Friday night.

The Lancers got great pitching, hitting and defense when they needed it to knock off the Roadrunners at Totman Stadium. Nick Plaia went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Chad Castillo and John Glenn had two-hit nights and a run batted in for CBU.

Logan Rinehart gave CBU a quality start on the mound with six scoreless innings on the mound. He worked around five hits, four walks and struck out five. Rinehart retired the Roadrunners in order in the first and third innings and left the bases loaded in the second and fifth.

Four relievers helped the Lancers close out the Roadrunners, with Matt Amrhein earning his fourth save of the season with just one out. Mason McGarvey struck out the one batter he faced for the second out in the top of the ninth.

CBU improves to 21-12 and 6-4 in the WAC, while CSUB drops to 15-20, 3-7. The WAC series continues with the third Fireworks Night of the season Saturday at 6 p.m. at Totman Stadium and then ends Sunday at noon.

The Lancers took the lead with a three-run third inning. Plaia led off the inning with a full-count double to right center. Angelo Capolupo put runners at the corners with a single through the right side, and Castillo drove in the first run with a bloop single to right.

Ryan Mota and Glenn gave the Lancers some insurance runs with back-to-back, two-out RBI singles in the inning.

The Roadrunners threatened to tie the game or even take the lead when they scored a run and then loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth.

CSUB chose to test the arm of Castillo on a shallow fly ball to left field, and he made them pay by gunning down the runner at home for the inning-ending double play that kept CBU up by two, 3-1.

The Lancers got the run back in the bottom of the eighth. Plaia started a small two-out rally with a single and stolen base and then came home on a single from Harrison Spohn.

The Roadrunners brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth with two runners on and one out. McGarvey got the big second strikeout before Amrhein ended the game with a popup to first.
