Kingsley Crowned Day-One Leader at WAC Championships
4/27/2019 3:28:00 PM | Men's Golf
LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Harrison Kingsley made quite the debut on day one of the Western Athletic Conference Championships, and is the overall leader through 18 holes for California Baptist University.
Four Lancers currently rank in the top-25 of the 40 individuals competing in the conference tournament, while three are in the top-20 at the Oakbrook Golf Club. Ryan Monsalve gave CBU a second golfer in the top-15 by shooting two-over-par 73 in round one.
The Lancers cannot officially register a team score, as they are ineligible for the WAC team title due to the transition to NCAA Division I, but they would have put together a 290 that would have them tied for third in the conference standings.
Kingsley started the week by shooting three-under-par 68 on Saturday's first round of three. It tied for his best round of the season, and gave him a one-shot lead over the rest of the field, with four golfers shooting 69 over their first 18.
The true freshman did most of his damage on the front nine, with four of his six birdies over that span. He then counteracted two bogeys on the back nine with a pair of birdies.
Monsalve got off to a hot start, as well, with three of his four birdies over the front nine. The sophomore added one more on the 11th hole to finish with his 73. He goes into the second round in a four-way tie for 15th.
Dan Heron and Ben Hallam both shot 75 or better on Saturday to put themselves in top-25 standings. Heron carded a 74 with the help of just two birdies, while Hallam birdied four times to shoot 75. Hallam had the best finish of any Lancer by playing his last three holes one under.
Justin Cross is tied for 35th place after he shot 80 on Saturday. CBU will tee off round two from 8 a.m. to 8:32 a.m. on Sunday. Fans can follow rounds two and three with live stats provided by Golfstat.
