Lancers Conclude Day One of Nick Watney Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. --- After the first and second rounds of the Nick Watney Invitational, the California Baptist men's golf team shot a team score of 583 to sit in a tie for 13th.
The Nick Watney Invitational was hosted by Fresno State at the Fort Washington Country Club, with the course playing as a par-71 at 6,729 yards.
The 15-team field was represented by some of the best in the West Region, as Long Beach State and Brigham Young are tied for first after 36 holes with a 14-under-par 554 team score.
Fresno State is in a close third with a 13-under-par 555 team score, while three teams are tied for fourth at 8-under-par.
Monday's round was up and down for the Lancers, as they finished the first 18 holes with a team score of 287 to sit in eighth. CBU ended the second round with a 296 to combine for a 583 team score to tie with Cal Poly at 13th.
Justin Cross fired off the Lancers' first score in the 60's, as the sophomore shot a 3-under-par 68 in the morning round. He finished the day with a 3-over-par 74 to combine for a 142 and is T-27th. In his morning round, Cross carded a season-best seven birdies, with five birdies coming in the final eight holes.
John Hayes was close behind Cross with a 2-over-par 71-73-144 to finish T-35th. Dan Heron shot a 6-over-par 73-75=148 and is T-65th, while Ryan Monsalve signed a 7-over-par 75-74=149 to place T-73rd.
Jack Solis ended his day with a 9-over-par 76-75=151 and is in a tie for 82nd.
Hunter Epson of Long Beach State did most of the damage for the top team in the field, firing off a 1—under-par 68-64=132 to lead the field of 92 golfers by one stroke.
The Lancers will look to move up the leaderboard in the final round on Tuesday, Oct. 1, with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
