Schrader Extends Winning Streak at VMI

LEXINGTON – Zach Schrader, AJ Raya and Garrett Strang all won multiple matches, as California Baptist University dualed three times on Friday.
Schrader won all three of his matches, with two coming on major decisions, to extend his winning streak to six matches and give him 16 wins on the year to already match his total of 2018-19. Raya and Strang both won twice on the day in the Virginia Military Institute's Cormack Hall.
After four-straight duals on the road, the Lancers (3-5) return home for one of their final two duals in the Van Dyne Gym. The first comes when Stanford visits Saturday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. CBU then closes out its home season with a dual against Cal Poly in Van Dyne on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
It all came down to a tiebreaker to decide the winner between the Lancers and Keydets, as both teams were even at 21 points apiece after 10 matches. The first two tiebreakers (number of matches won and number of pins) were a wash, as well, and VMI took the match on the third tiebreaker (points scored in non-pin matches, 18-17).
Dilan Atjun and Christian Nunez got CBU off to a great with back-to-back first-period pins at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively.
Raya increased the Lancers' lead to 15-3 with a hard-fought, 4-1 decision at 149.
VMI managed to tie the dual up at 15-15 with three-straight wins, including a pin at 174. Garrett Strang gave CBU back an 18-15 lead with a gritty, 4-2 overtime victory at 184. The Keydets then took a 21-18 lead with a key overtime pin.
Raya (4-2) and Strang (3-2) both won tough matches by decision against Cleveland State. Schrader closed out that dual with a strong 15-6 major decision at heavyweight.
The Lancers got decision victories from 141-pounder Adam Velasquez (5-3) and 174 Jacob Cooper (7-2) before Schrader's second major decision of the day (14-5).
