Lancers Take Stanford to the Limit

The Lancers were only a few points shy of a huge upset as they won four of 10 matches and saw two of its losses come by one point each. It was one of CBU's best-ever showings in the series with Stanford. Adam Velasquez, AJ Raya, Garrett Strang and Zach Schrader all won their matches for CBU.
Velasquez and Raya got the Lancers thinking upset right out of the gates, with decision wins in the first two matches at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Velasquez overcame a deficit twice to secure a 6-4 decision win over Luciano Arroyo.

Raya picked up a decision victory of his own with an 8-3 score line over Dawson Sihavong to give CBU a 6-0 lead right away.

Stanford won the next three matches, with two decisions and a pin from seventh-ranked Shane Griffiths at 165 pounds to take a 12-6 lead at the halfway point.
Strang produced the most dominant win of the night for CBU, with a 10-5 decision over Nick Addison at 184 pounds. It counts for win No. 13 of the season for Strang.

Schrader notched his seventh-consecutive victory with a 3-2 decision over David Showunmi in the heavyweight contest. Raya and Schrader share the team lead in victories this season at 17 apiece.

Dilan Atjun (125), Jacob Cooper (174) and Arick Lopez (197) all put together competitive matchups but just came up short, with all three having their bouts decided by either riding time or a late point in the third period.

The Lancers will host their Senior Day with a dual against Cal Poly on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym. It will be a dual doubleheader, as high school teams Servite and Poway will face off at the same time.
