FAIRFIELD – Zach Schrader helped raise the bar for California Baptist University, as he won his 19th match of the season in a dual at Sacred Heart on Saturday. It set a new season-high for wins for the Lancers in the NCAA Division I era after Zander Silva set it at 18 in 2018-19.
CBU rallied late against Sacred Heart by winning four of the final six matches before ultimately falling to the Pioneers 21-17 at the William H. Pitt Center on Saturday. Freshmen Dilan Atjun and Christian Nunez stayed hot by winning their matches on bonus points for the Lancers, who also got a win from AJ Raya.
Beginning with the 165 pound matches, CBU was in a 15-0 hole after four matches.
The Lancers quickly roared back with major decision victories from Schrader and Atjun at heavyweight and 125 pounds. Nunez followed that up with the biggest win of the day, with a pin at 133 pounds to narrow the gap to one point, 15-14.
Sacred Heart and CBU traded decision victories in the 141 and 149-pound matches. Raya picked up the win for the Lancers at 149-pounds to again cut the deficit to one at 18-17 and to make the 157-pound bout a winner-take-all affair. The Pioneers grabbed the match and dual victory with a 3-1 decision.
With Schrader's victory in the heavyweight match, he extends his winning streak to nine matches, improves to 11-0 in duals and also earns a team-leading 19th victory on the season. Raya is not far off, with 18 wins and an 8-3 dual record on the year. Atjun's win gave him five in his last six outings and moved his record to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in duals.
Fresh off winning the California Collegiate Open, Nunez has now won five in a row and seven of his last nine to bring his record to 12-8 on the year.
Next up, the Lancers travel to Corvallis, Oregon for a Valentine's night dual with Oregon State.
