Lancers in Fifth After Darkness Halts Day One

COTO DE CAZA --- Darkness suspended play at the Orange County Collegiate Classic on Monday, as California Baptist University's men's golf team finished the first day in fifth out of 17 teams.
The 17-team field is being hosted by UC Irvine on the par 72, 6,986 yard Coto de Caza South Course. The two-day tournament was meant to be played with 36 holes on the first day, but daylight ran out, suspending play with a couple of holes left in the second round.
The Lancers finished the first 18 holes with a 12-over-par 300 team score to sit in the top-5. The Lancers were on pace to break their first-round score, but darkness suspended play with the team sitting at 9-over par with a couple of holes left to play. The current 9-over par team score keeps the Lancers in fifth by one stroke over host UCI.
San Francisco went into the clubhouse as the day one leader, while Cal State Fullerton is in second, and No. 21 UC San Diego is in third. UCSD is in its final year of NCAA DII play before it makes the transition to D1 next season. Grand Canyon holds a one-stroke advantage over the Lancers in fourth.
CBU carded 12 birdies in the first round, as Justin Cross led the team with a 2-under-par 70. Cross managed 14 pars during the first 18 holes with three birdies and one bogey. He is currently tied for sixth with a 3-over-par total and three holes left in the second round.
Connor Benjamin and John Hayes cracked the top-30, as Benjamin is T-22nd, and Hayes is T-29th. Benjamin is currently 5-over-par and has four holes left in round two, while Hayes is 6-over-par and has three holes left.
Ryan Monsalve carded the Lancers' lone eagle on the day on hole six and is currently T-49th at 9-over par. Jacob Smith has three holes left in his second round and is T-79th at 17-over-par.
Derek Castillo of Cal State Fullerton leads the field of 93 golfers with a 7-under-par through 14 holes in the second round.
The final 22 holes will start on Tuesday, Feb. 11, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
