JURUPA VALLEY --- California Baptist University's men's golf team hosted the final round of The Joust on Tuesday, as the 16-team field battled the wind for the final 18 holes.
Although it didn't receive an invite to the event, the wind joined the 85-player field during Tuesday's round. Gusts were recorded up to 40mph throughout the day, but all players and teams finished despite but the tough conditions.
"Today was difficult for everyone," said head coach TL Brown. "I'm proud everyone finished in such difficult conditions. We set the course up to play firm and fast, and it definitely played much tougher than we see it during weekly practices. It was impressive to witness 85 college golfers take on the challenge."
Omaha held on to its day one lead with a 279-285-306=870 to claim the team championship. Cal Poly finished in second with an 879 team score, while Seattle U placed third with an 883. The Lancers finished in a tie for sixth with North Dakota State after shooting a 293-286-315=894. No team shot under 300 in the final round.
Seattle U won the All-Five Team Champion posting a score of 1,117 to edge out Cal Poly by one stroke.
Justin Cross continued to lead the Lancers on the final day, posting a team-best 75 to place T-13th. Cross went 76-68=75=219 over 54 holes. John Hayes and Jacob Smith both finished T-21st with a 224 score. Hayes shot a 70-75-79, while Smith carded a 72-73-79.
Ryan Monsalve finished the tournament at T-56th with a 75-74-82=231, and Ivan Monsalve placed 65th with a 77-71-85=233.
James Mackie competed as an individual for the Lancers and made a run at the top spot throughout the day. Mackie moved up three spots on the leaderboard and finished third after posting a 3-over-par 68-72-73=213.
Dan Heron and Michael Sarro also competed as individuals, as the pair combined to move up 15 spots on the leaderboard. Heron jumped up seven spots to finish T-36th with a 75-74-78=227, while Sarro moved eight spots with a 75-75-78=228.
"Excited to watch the continual growth of Justin," said Brown. "He is a competitor that guts out every round. His future looks bright. The biggest breakthrough of the week was the incredible play of freshman James Mackie. Playing in his first collegiate event and he almost wins it. So proud of his battle this week."
The Lancers will play next at the Bandon Dunes Championships from March 8-10 at the legendary Pacific Dunes Golf Course.
