RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University wrestling opened its home season with a dual against Utah Valley on Friday night in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers gave their future Big 12 Conference opponent Wolverines all they could handle, thanks to wins from Christian Nunez, AJ Raya, Josh Grant and Arick Lopez in a 20-13 loss. CBU's record moves to 0-2 on the year, while UVU improves to 5-1.
CBU will compete at its first official tournament since March of 2020 when they travel to CSU Bakersfield's Roadrunner Open on Sunday. CBU will then head to Iowa for a dual with Iowa State on Saturday, Nov. 27 and the Cyclone Open on Sunday, Nov. 28.
Utah Valley is a strong opponent, as it came into the day with three wrestlers ranked in NCAA Division I. The Wolverines are also ranked 25th in the latest WIN Magazine Tournament Power Index and 27th in the FloWrestling Team Tournament poll.
Nunez provided CBU's biggest win of the day with a 10-2 major decision at 141 pounds. He used three takedowns in the win, including one in the first period that led to a nearfall and put him in control early.
It was the start of a strong run for the Lancers. Raya put together three takedowns, too, in his 8-3 decision victory at 157, while Grant came out the aggressor at 165 in a 5-3 win, as well.
Lopez grinded through a tightly-contested match at 197. Both wrestlers only managed an escape in regulation to send things into a sudden death overtime. Lopez took the win after a penalty early into the extra period.
While Hunter Leake didn't get the win, he had one of the most impressive performances of any Lancer. He took on Haiden Drury, who is ranked as high as 28th in Division I. Leake took a 1-0 lead in the match with an escape with 1:27 to go, but Drury got a takedown with 51 seconds left and held on for the 2-1 win.
