Gerlach's Win Highlights Opening Day for CBU at North Dakota State

Caden Gerlach opens the season at 1-0 after he secured the Lancers' victory with a 7-4 decision in his match at 184 pounds. The Bison, who are ranked 25th in FloWrestling's NCAA Division I Tournament Rankings, secured the dual win on a score of 43-3.

It was the season opener for both squads, with North Dakota State opening up 1-0 and CBU 0-1. In all, North Dakota State has six wrestlers who are currently ranked in the NCAA on its roster and five NCAA qualifiers.

CBU was close to several other wins versus the Bison on Saturday. Chaz Hallmark dropped a 6-5 decision at 149 pounds, while Devin Garcia lost in overtime in his first collegiate match at 125. Hunter Leake (8-5) and Christopher Island (5-1) also lost on decision at 133 and heavyweight, respectively.

Island gave the Bison's 285-pounder Brandon Metz a strong challenge. Metz qualified for the NCAA Championships last season and is ranked 23rd in the nation by FloWrestling and 27th by Intermat at his weight class.

The Lancers will make their home debut next when they welcome in Utah Valley to the Van Dyne Gym on Friday, Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m.
