LAS VEGAS – For the first time in three years, California Baptist University wrestling competed at the Cliff Keen Invitational, a high-profile tournament that boasts some of the top teams and individuals in collegiate wrestling.
Eight Lancers: Devin Garcia (125 pounds), Antonio Saldate (133), Christian Nunez (141), Chaz Hallmark (149), AJ Raya (157), Louis Rojas (174), Caden Gerlach (184) and Arick Lopez (197) took part in the elite event. A total of 27 teams, including nine ranked squads: No. 8 Ohio State, No. 9 Nebraska, No. 11 Cornell, No. 12 Minnesota, No. 15 Purdue, No. 18 Oklahoma, No. 20 Princeton, No. 24 Northwestern and No. 25 Stanford were in attendance at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
It was a tough draw across the board for CBU, which faced a total of six top-20 ranked wrestlers and three other honorable mentions in the first two rounds Friday.
Gerlach provided the highlight of the day for the Lancers when he won his consolation match over Stanford's Colbey Harlan with a pin early in the second period. Gerlach nearly pulled off an upset of his own in a 7-4 loss to Wyoming's Tate Samuelson, the top seed and 13th-ranked wrestler at 184.
Raya pushed Purdue's Quincy Monday, the second-seeded and sixth-ranked 157-pounder in the country, in his first match. Monday had to work to secure the 8-3 win over Raya, who has now faced three top-13 ranked opponents this year.
Garcia dropped a close, 8-6 decision to Kent State's Jake Ferri in his consolation match to nearly earn another win for CBU on the day.
The Lancers will now turn their attention to the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 19. That will wrap up 2021 for CBU, as it will return to dual action from there with a trip to Stanford on Saturday, Jan. 8.
