WBB Preview: GCU Comes To Town To Make Case For Regular Season Title
2/16/2021 9:08:00 AM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – Typically, any series between the Lancers and the Lopes ends up being a good one, but rarely has one had such implications on it.
The Lancers are on the brink of claiming their first-ever WAC regular-season title, but mathematically Grand Canyon can still make a case for it as well. This weekend's tussle between the conference's top two teams will get us much closer to an answer to the question of best in the West.
The Lancers are coming off of their fifth-straight conference sweep after taking a pair of games in Edinburg, Texas, against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, 82-61 & 79-64 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. This series truly showcased the Lancers depth as five different Lancers averaged 10 or more points per game, and seven played 40 or more minutes.
CBU has pushed their active win streak to 21-straight with the solo lead within sight as they are second only to inactive Princeton at 22 in-a-row. The Lancers hold some of the nation's top statistical marks as well. Olaeta currently leads the nation in assists (138) and assists-per-game (8.1), while Britney Thomas currently ranks second in Division I in field goal percentage at 64.5. The team currently ranks second in assists-per-game (21.8), third in assists (393), third in field goal percentage defense (31.7), eighth in three-point percentage defense (23.2), and tenth in scoring margin (+20.1).

As if playing a season with such strenuous and difficult challenges wasn't enough, Grand Canyon entered the 2020-21 with a brand new coach, and without their three top-scorers from a season ago. Though few doubted head coach Molly Miller's abilities coming into the season, it wasn't clear where the team would make up its lost offense. That question has been answered in the form of freshman Katie Scott who is the only Lope currently averaging double-figures with 16.4 points per game while also leading in rebounds at 5.6 per game. Don't be fooled by the sole GCU player in double-figures, as four more are right behind Scott at 9.6 points-per-game or better.
Grand Canyon's defense will truly test the WAC's most efficient offense as the Lopes currently rank first in the nation in steals, steals per game, turnovers forced, and turnover margin. A pair of Lopes, Laura Piera (3.06), and Taylor Caldwell (2.94) rank seventh and eighth in the nation in steals per game individually.

Caitlyn Harper had another outstanding series averaging team-highs in both points (18.5) and rebounds (9.5), while Sydney Palma had one of the great games of the season, taking over in the second half of a close game on Saturday to score 18 of her game-high 23 points after the Vaqueros took a 42-40 lead. Ane Olaeta shined again, posting back-to-back double-doubles of 10 points and 13 assists on Friday, followed by 13 points and 11 assists on Saturday.📈
