
Smith Shoots Career-Best at GCU Invitational

PHOENIX ---- California Baptist University men's golf team finished the first 36 holes of the GCU Invitational on Monday, as the Lancers sit in 14th out of 16 teams.
Grand Canyon, who is playing host to the 16-team field, went into the clubhouse as the day one leader with an even-par 568 team score. Eastern Michigan is one stroke off the Lopes in second with a 569 team score, and Wichita State is in third with a 572.
The Lancers showed resilience and grit in the second round of Monday's action, firing the third-lowest score of the round with a 2-over-par 286 team score. It moved them up two spots to finish ahead of Drake and South Dakota. The Lancers are currently five strokes off the top 10.
Jacob Smith played a major factor in the Lancers' 286 team score in the second round, firing a career-best 4-under-par 67 to move to tied for ninth in the program's history for low score in 18 holes. Smith lit the scorecard on fire, carding seven birdies to erase three bogeys in the round. He is currently T-19th with a 1-over-par 76-67=143. Dan Heron recorded a 75-71=146 and is T-40th, while John Hayes shot a 73-75=148 to place T-59th. James Mackie finished with a 77-73=150 to take T-77th, and Justin Cross signed back-to-back 76's for a 152 and is T-82nd. Ryan Monsalve competed as an individual for the Lancers and is tied with Cross at 82nd.
Zack Owens of Wichita State and Ty Celone of Eastern Michigan are tied for first with a 3-under-par 139.
The Lancers will look to battle in Tuesday's final round as they look to climb up the leaderboard.
