
Mackie Leads Lancers In First Round At WAC Championships

BOULDER CITY --- California Baptist University's James Mackie led the way for the Lancers in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Friday.
Mackie cracked the top-10 with a 3-under-par 69 to place T-8th in the first round. Mackie was lights out on the back nine, recording two eagles, one birdie, and one bogey for a 4-under-par 32.

Justin Cross and Ryan Fisher both finished T-24th with a 2-over-par 74. Cross opened the front nine with a 3-over-par 39 but rallied to shoot a 1-under-par 35 on the back. He managed to shoot the 1-under-par after recording four birdies on the back nine with one triple.

Fisher also battled on the back nine, shooting a 2-under-par 34 with three birdies and one bogey. He played the last seven holes at 3-under-par.

John Hayes signed a 4-over-par 76 to place T-32nd, while Jacob is currently at 37th with a 5-over-par 77.
As for the team scores, NM State leads the way after day one with a 15-under-par 273 team score. Grand Canyon is two strokes off the Aggies with a 13-under-par 275 team score. Both the Aggies and the Lopes took advantage of the early morning tee times, as the heat started to play a factor later in the day. Seattle U is in third with a 7-under-par 281 team score, while Utah Valley is in fourth with a 5-under-par 283 team score. With CBU in its third year of the transition process, the Lancers aren't eligible to post a team score in the standings.
Garrison Smith of NM State leads the 40-player field with an 8-under-par 64 on the day.
The Lancers will tee off at 8 a.m. for the second round on Saturday, May 1, as high winds are in the forecast.
