9/25/2021 3:26:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University volleyball kept its undefeated home record intact with a sweep of Chicago State in its Western Athletic Conference opener on Saturday.
The Lancers shut down the Cougars' go-to hitter and limited CSU to a .087 hitting percentage (30-21-103) in a 25-19, 25-13, 25-19 victory to start the conference campaign in the Van Dyne Gym.
California Baptist improves to 6-5 on the year, 1-0 in WAC play and 4-0 on its home floor. Chicago State's three-match winning streak ends in the loss and its record drops to 9-5, 1-1.
Offensively, CBU hit .310 as a team (41-10-100) and posted a 69.8 sideout percentage in the lopsided win. Christine Graf led the offense with 10 kills on a .500 hitting percentage (10-1-18).
Leah Pease had 18 assists and five digs, while Hana Okuhara added 13 assists, six digs and two kills on three attempts. Tesa Oaks and Anouk van Noord each had eight kills on .333 hitting percentages.
KEY TO THE MATCH
Defensively, the Lancers locked up CSU's top offensive threat, Yanlis Felix, for most of the match. She leads the WAC and ranks top-10 in all of NCAA Division I in kills (236) and kills per set (4.82) this season, but had just four kills through two sets on Saturday.
Overall, Felix was held to just 11 kills on a .135 hitting percentage (11-6-37) by the Lancers just two days after she put down 19 kills in a three-set win at Seattle.
CBU's block frustrated CSU and put down seven blocks in the match. Laura Walewska had four kills and four blocks, while fellow middle blocker Chandler Gorman had four kills and three blocks. Oaks had four digs and blocks each, while van Noord added five digs and three blocks.
The Lancers' service took the Cougars out of system all match. Cassidy Dennison chipped in six digs and three aces, while Paige Johnstone had a team-high nine digs and an ace and Scherine Dahoue had five kills and an ace.

California Baptist is one of two undefeated teams left in the WAC West Division after the first week of conference.
