HUNTSVILLE --- California Baptist University moved up two spots in the final round of the Bearkat Invitational on Tuesday, as the Lancers placed second out of 14 teams.
The Lancers 7-over-par 291 team score tied the low round for the day as they jumped Grand Canyon and the University of Louisiana Monroe. Host school Sam Houston won the two-day event with a 17-over-par 869 team score.
"I'm very proud of this TEAM for the heart they showed all day today during the final round," said head coach Marc Machado. "This is not an easy course, and they continued to fight all day."
CBU went on to shoot a 28-over-par 292-297-291=880 team score to finish in second for the second straight tournament of the season. The Lancers now have six straight tournaments inside the top-3 dating back to the GCU Invitational on March 2, 2021.
The Lancers entered the final 18 holes trailing ULM by three strokes and GCU by five strokes. The team managed to erase the deficit, edging ULM by one and the Lopes by three. The Lancers managed to finish ahead of five of the six Western Athletic Conference teams at the tournament.
"We spoke about dependability this tourney," said Machado. "How can we be there for one another when we are in five different spots on the course? Well, with lots of positive body language and encouragement whenever we saw one another in the distance. Our mission was to make each other know that they were not alone and that we were battling together as a unit."
The Lancers did just that, as all five golfers moved up the leaderboard on the final day. Three of the five Lancers finished inside the top-15. Jocelyn Chee was the top finisher for the Lancers, moving up one spot to fifth with a 3-over-par 72-72-72=216.
Sofia Chabon climbed up three spots to take T-11th with a 7-over-par 72-75-73=220, while Hailey Loh placed T-14th with an 8-over-par 73-74-74=221.
Haruka Shintani made the biggest jump up the leaderboard with nine spots to take T-28th, signing a 14-over-par 75-80-72=227. Filipa Capelo moved up two spots to place T-45th with a 23-over-par 82-76-78=236.
Ellen Nicholas of Incarnate Word earned the medalist honors with a 5-under-par 69-70-69=208.
"This final round was about pride and showing that we do have what it takes," added Machado. "It's just a matter of time before the TEAM comes together to get that first tourney win."
The Lancers will travel to Washington next for the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invite on Oct. 11-12 at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.
