RIVERSIDE --- Less than a week awaits the California Baptist University men's golf team, as the Lancers will open the season at the Golfweek Fall Invitational on Sept. 12-14.
The three-day tournament will be hosted at True Blue Golf Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, hosted by Golfweek. This premier event will welcome 18 teams at this "Nationally Recognized" golf course with rolling terrain and spectacular views across all 18 holes. Golf Magazine ranked true Blue Golf Club in the "2019 Top 100 Resorts in North America.".
"Always a big trip when you travel across the country to start your season," said head coach TL Brown. "It will be important for the guys to adjust quickly to the time change and trust our team preparation these last two weeks."
With qualifying under their belts, the event lineup for the Golfweek Fall Invitational will consist of Sean Citherlet, John Hayes, James Mackie, Ryan Fisher, and Min Jun Kim. Citherlet, an incoming freshman from Mexico, won the five-round qualifier with an 8-under-par 351.
With no starting spot assured throughout the year, Coach Brown is excited to see what type of competitive scores will come from this team.
"We have a couple of upperclassmen showing some growth after successful summer campaigns," said Brown. "I believe our three new players will make an immediate impact. Excited about our team's qualifying numbers. The next step is learning to bring the "A" game on the road."
Hayes, Mackie, and Justin Cross return for the Lancers after playing in all seven tournaments during the shortened 2021 spring season. Hayes was the low man for the team last season, putting together a scoring average of 74.52. Mackie had an eventful summer taking on the Korn Ferry Tour in Utah and producing a 6-under-par. He would be the only amateur on the leaderboard in the top-10, taking T-4th.
Luke Bartram, Eeli Kujanpää, and Citherlet join the Lancers as the three new players on the team.
Bartram, a junior transfer from Cypress Community College, led the Chargers as the No. 1 player during his two seasons. He held a scoring average of 73.4 and was named First Team All-Conference.
Kujanpää, who hails from Lapua, Finland, joins the Lancers with a plethora of experience. In 2020, he won the Fujitsu Finnish Junior Tour 1, firing a 63-67-73. He was also a member of the victorious 2021 Finnish European Amateur Team Championship and finished fourth with rounds of 70-70 & 71 during the 2021 Finnish Amateur.
Citherlet, who hails from Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, joins the CBU team after becoming the first Lancer to compete at the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur. He joins the program after being ranked No. 2 in the international rankings on Junior Golf Scoreboard.
After the Golfweek Fall Invitational, the Lancers will set their sights on the three remaining fall tournaments. CBU will compete at the Nick Watney Invitational (Sept. 27-28), the Oregon State Invitational (Oct. 11-12), and the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational (Oct. 21-23).
