Las Cruces, N.M. - The California Baptist University men's golf team, coming off of a strong showing a week ago, once against found itself near the top of the leaderboard on Monday in third place of the Herb Wimberly Invitational.
The New Mexico State hosted event had to suspend play in the second round due to darkness. Play will resume on Tuesday morning as CBU and Weber State were the only two teams of the nine-team field not to finish the round.
After the first round, the Lancers were in second place with a team score of 281, trailing only NM State (279). As play was suspended, CBU was -1 in the second round, -4 overall. NM State is currently in first place with a total two-round score of 550 (-18), and Western New Mexico State is in second place with a team score of 563 (-5). Weber State and Seattle U are tied for fourth (+2).
Individually, John Hayes led the way for the Lancers today, currently in third place at -5 with the incomplete second round. Reigning Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Month Garrison Smith of NM State is in first place at -9 (133), and Texas A&M-Commerce's Nathan McCulloch is in second place at -8 (134).
CBU's Eeli Kujanpää is tied for eighth place at -2, Chanhee Ryu is tied for 18th at +1, James Mackie is tied for 21st at +2, and Sean Citherlet is tied for 42nd at +7 as part of the five-person team line-up. Luke Bartram is competing as an individual and is tied for 33rd place at +5.
The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate has a different format than most tournaments. Instead of competing in groupings against other teams, teams will remain together throughout the day. For the first two rounds on Monday, the five golfers in CBU's lineup were always on the same hole together.
Third round play will begin at approximately 7:30 a.m. (Pacific) once second play has concluded on Tuesday.
