RIVERSIDE – The 16th-ranked California Baptist University men's water polo team finished the annual Lancer Joust tournament with another undefeated day, going 2-0 against Concordia (17-11) and California Lutheran (23-8).
The Lancers finish a very busy three-day stretch 5-1 from Thursday through Saturday, improving to 16-8 on the season.
GAME ONE VERSE CONCORDIA
CBU used massive second and third-period efforts to build a cushion against the Golden Eagles, outscoring Concordia 11-3 in that 16-minute stretch of action. At their peak, the Lancers scored seven unanswered goals between the end of the second period and the beginning of the third.
The Golden Eagles did win the fourth, but it was too little too late, and the Lancers had all but secured the victory by that point.
Two Lancers, Gabe McKenzie and Logan Puhl, each recorded a hat trick, with all three of Puhl'sPuhl's scores coming in the second period. Simon Taylor was locked in on his teammates, dishing out a season-high five assists.
GAME TWO VERSE CAL LUTHERAN
The tournament finale served an additional purpose, doubling as Senior Night for four longtime Lancers; Tristan Felberg, Angel Sanchez, Joseph Griffin, and Thomas de Wit. Pregame acclaim and adoration showered the four-some, but the festivities did not soften the team's resolve as the squad completed one of the season's most thorough victories.
Fourteen Lancers scored against the Kingsmen, led by a four-spot from Joseph Griffin in the first half and a hat trick from Cameron Cullen. De Wit continued pushing towards the single-season assist record, adding four to his total to reach 64 with 10 games left to play. He is just 15 helpers away from passing Chris Morgan, who set the mark at 78 back in 2008.
Midway through the third period, with the Lancers up comfortably with a 15-4 lead, out came the seniors for their recognition for four years well served. Felberg, Sanchez, Griffin, and de Wit all received their dues in front of a very appreciative home crowd.
The Lancers will be back on the road for the next seven games, a trip that starts with a bus ride to Irvine to take on the Anteaters on October 12. That game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
