JURUPA VALLEY --- California Baptist University's men's golf team jumped out to a hot start at The Joust on Monday, as the Lancers went into the clubhouse as the day one leader.
CBU welcomed 14 teams to the third annual event, as the Lancers are hosting the two-day tournament at Goose Creek Golf Club.
The Joust continues to be a tournament like no other, as three champions will be crowned after the final round on Feb. 22. An individual medalist will be awarded, a team champion will be awarded, and then an All-Five Team Champion will be crowned. Most tournaments allow five golfers to compete, with only four counting scores going towards the team score. The third champion will have to count all five player scores to see who will be crowned the All-Five Team Champion.
The Lancers opened the first round with a 3-under-par 281 team score to take a six-stroke lead in the 15-team field. CBU recorded the only under-par team score on the day and went into the clubhouse with a two-shot lead.
Darkness spoiled the Lancers' intentions of closing out the second round as the leader for both rounds, as six players came up one hole shy of finishing the day. California Baptist, Weber State, and Cal State Fullerton will have two players each finish the final hole of the second round before the final 18 holes will resume.
With the results as they are, the Lancers are currently in first with a 10-over-par total, while Weber State is in second with a 12-over-par total. Morehead State dropped a spot to third with a 16-over-par total, and CSUN closed out the leaderboard in fourth with a 19-over-par total.
After the first round, Freshman Eeli Kujanpää led the field with a bogey-free 3-under-par 68. It marked the fourth time Kujanpää has finished a round in the 60's.
Kujanpää was joined by fellow freshman teammate Sean Citherlet at the top of the leaderboard, as Citherlet fired a 2-under-par 69 to place tied for second. It marked the fifth time in his career Citherlet has signed a round in the 60's.
James Mackie climbed up four spots on the leaderboard to nearly close out his two rounds at tied for fifth. Mackie needs to finish one hole to complete his second round but currently stands at 1-over-par after firing an even-par 71 in the first round.

In the second round, Luke Bartram made the most significant leap up the leaderboard, jumping up 19 spots to take T-44th after shooting a 3-over-par 74 in the second round.
Justin Cross led the individuals for the Lancers, finishing with a 10-over-par 152 to place T-50th, while Min Jun Kim placed T-61st with a 12-over-par 154. Ryan Fisher ended his day with a 21-over-par 163 to take T-82nd.
Ryan Hodgins of Simon Fraser ended the first day as the field's leader with a 1-under-par 141.
The Lancers will look to keep their top spot as they close out the final round on Tuesday, Feb. 22, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
