JURUPA VALLEY --- California Baptist University's men's golf team finished the final round in third out of 15 teams at The Joust on Tuesday.
It marks the highest finish for the Lancers at their third annual tournament in the NCAA Division I era. The two-day tournament took place at Goose Creek Golf Club and played as a par 71 for the 54-hole event.
Weber State stayed consistent throughout the two days, producing a 6-over-par team score in all three rounds for an 18-over-par 870 team score. Morehead State snuck past the Lancers by one stroke to take second with a 28-over-par 880 team score. California Baptist finished with a 29-over-par 881 score to hold firm at third. Cal State Fullerton finished in fourth with an 882 team score, while UC Santa Barbara and Idaho tied for fifth with an 884 team score.
The Joust is a tournament like no other, as it crowns three champions after the final round. To go along with the individual medalist and the team champion, a third award is crowned to the All-Five Champion. Most tournaments allow five golfers to compete, with only four counting scores going towards the team score. The third champion has to count all five player scores to see who will be crowned the All-Five Team Champion.
Weber State claimed the All-Five Team championship with a 1,100 total team score. Morehead State finished in second with a 1,114, while the Lancers claimed third with a 1,115. Fullerton finished in fourth (1,119), CSUN took fifth (1,120) and UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego finished tied for sixth (1,122).
Freshman Eeli Kujanpää climbed up five spots in the final day, recording his first top-5 finish in his young career at T-5th with a 3-over-par 68-77-71=216.
