GOLETA --- California Baptist University's men's golf team claimed its second top-5 finish of the spring season on Tuesday, as the Lancers placed fourth out of 14 teams at the Sandpiper Invitational.
On Monday, the two-day tournament was shortened to 36 holes after high winds forced a cancelation of the second 18 holes. The Lancers wrapped up the final tournament of the spring season with momentum on their side before heading to the Western Athletic Conference Championship on April 29-May 1.
California Baptist finished the second day with a 3-over-par team score to secure the top-5 spot with an 8-over-par 584 team score. The Lancers held off Gonzaga, who placed fifth with a 14-over-par 590 team score, and Utah State, who shot an 18-over-par 594 team score.
CSUN and Grand Canyon shared the championship in a tie for first with an even-par 576 team score, while Sacramento State narrowly edged the Lancers in third with a 3-over-par 579 team score.
Eeli Kujanpää ended his day as the top finisher for the Lancers, as the freshman produced back-to-back even-par rounds for a 144 total to place T-7th. Luke Bartram recorded a 2-over-par 72-74=146 to finish T-11th, while James Mackie, John Hayes, and Sean Citherlet all finished T-29th. Mackie jumped up a team-best 16 spots with an even-par 72 on the final day to finish with a 5-over-par 149, while Hayes climbed up 11 spots to tie his teammate after a 1-over-par 73 in the final round. Citherlet joined the pair with a 5-over-par 73-76=149. Min Jun Kim competed as an individual for the Lancers and placed T-80th with a 22-over-par 166.
Matteo Cristoni of Grand Canyon fired a 7-under-par 65 to move up 20 spots to take the individual medalist honors with a final 5-under-par 139 to edge the field by one stroke.
The Lancers will turn their attention to the WAC Championships at the end of the month, where they will compete at Boulder Creek Golf Course in Boulder Creek, Nevada. This marks the final year of the transition period, where no team score will be recorded, and the players will compete as individuals.
