Wins 28 and 29 also guaranteed the first winning season in the NCAA Division I era for CBU softball, as it currently owns a 29-24 record with just three games left to play. CBU also improves to 11-10 in the Western Athletic Conference, marking the first double-digit win record in league play since joining the WAC in 2019. NM State falls to 10-34 overall and 5-16 in league play as the Aggies have one final conference series at Utah Valley before heading to the WAC Tournament.
The trip to Las Cruces was CBU's highest scoring series of the season, posting 24 runs total with Sydney Soto and Priscilla Estrada recording five runs each. Amanda Argomaniz had the series of her college career in New Mexico, closing out with a .727 average (8-11), three runs scored, five RBI and a home run. Jordan Schuring dominated in the circle, earning two wins and a save against the Aggies while maintaining a 1.62 ERA in 13 innings of work.
GAME ONE
Saturday's opener proved to be a high-scoring affair as the two teams combined for 19 runs on 26 hits. Action was non-stop as every half inning saw at least one hit with the exception of the bottom of the seventh.
The Aggies opened scoring in the bottom of the second, getting a bases-loaded triple and capitalizing on a Lancer error to score four runs in the frame. The Lancers answered immediately, tying the game in the top of the third with RBI hits from Nicole Stark, Soto, Maile Olsen and Molly Kolander.
The stalemate would not last long as NMSU kept hitting in the bottom half of the third, bringing three more runs home before Amanda Hernandez would come in for relief work and shut the inning down.
CBU was up to the challenge and responded with a second-straight, four-run frame, and taking an 8-7 lead. Back-to-back doubles from Amanda Argomaniz and Kolander brought in Olsen, Soto, Estrada and Argomaniz as action intensified in New Mexico.
The Aggies scored one more in the bottom of the fourth, making it an 8-8 game. Pinch hitter Makenna Dashiell and Estrada both reached base to start the top of the fifth. Samantha Demyon would score as a pinch runner courtesy of Stark's second RBI knock of the game. Katelyn Mangrello brought Estrada home two pitches later, pushing CBU into double-digits on the scoreboard.
The home team would score one more run in the bottom of the sixth, making it 10-9, but Schuring retired the side with just seven pitches in the bottom of the seventh to earn her second save of the season. Hernandez picked up her first win of the season, and her first since Feb. 7, 2020, after a shortened season and missing the 2021 season due to injury.
GAME TWO
The series finale was a drastic change of pace as the two teams were not swinging the bats as successfully as they had been in games one and two. Each team recorded just one hit through the first three innings as the game was scoreless when the fourth inning began.
The first two Lancer hitters quickly went down to open the frame, but Soto broke the trend with a double to center field on a 2-0 count. Argomaniz followed her approach, finding a bit more distance than Soto, sending her second home run of the year quickly over the center field wall to give CBU a 2-0 lead.
The Lancers would increase their lead to five runs by adding three in the sixth inning, all unearned, via an error, a wild pitch and a ground out. NMSU would only manage to get two runners into scoring position, but one of them tested senior Tiana Patrick from behind home plate and was thrown out comfortably at third.
The Aggies came into game three with a team batting average of .309, but Schuring was locked in. The redshirt freshman threw her third complete game shutout of the season, allowing just three hits, zero walks, and retired 12-straight Aggies during a stretch from the first to the fifth innings. Schuring is pitching on another level right now, currently boasting a 1.09 ERA with a 4-0 record, a save and a 17-2 strikeout-to-walk rate in the Lancers' previous five games.
UP NEXT
The Lancers return to Riverside confident and ready to finish out the season with a series against the West Division champions in Grand Canyon this weekend. GCU lost Friday's doubleheader to Dixie State, but claimed Saturday's finale to secure outright divisional championship status. The Lancers and Lopes will begin play on Friday with a doubleheader at 4 and 6:30 p.m. and finish with Saturday's Senior Day game, slated for a 5 p.m. first pitch with Senior Day ceremonies happening prior to the game.
