Lancers Sweep Steeplechase Titles at WAC Championships

Ivo Balabanov won the men's crown with a record time while Greta Karinauskaite broke 10 minutes for the second time this season in her championship race on the women's side on Friday at the University of Washington's Husky Track.

Balabanov won his race by more than five seconds with a CBU record time of eight minutes, 39.55 seconds, which is a top-20 time in NCAA Division I coming into the week. It shattered the previous program record of 8:49.85 set by Valentin Robert in 2017.
The Lancers added two more all-conference performances at the University of Washington Husky Track on Saturday, with Karin Gosek and Emilia Mikszuta finishing top eight in the women's steeplechase.

Karinauskaite ran the steeplechase in sub 10 minutes for the third time this season and won by more than 18 seconds with a 9:58.41, which was a WAC Championship record. Gosek placed fourth in 10:26.60, which was a top-10 time in program history, and Mikszuta took sixth in a PR of 10:30.97.

Anneken Viljoen and Mia Cabrera both qualified for the 800-meter finals. Viljoen took sixth in 2:09.61, a top-eight time in CBU history, and Cabrera placed seventh in a season-best 2:10.25. Viljoen will run both the 800 and 1500 on Saturday.
CBU will end the WAC Championships and its season with the 800, 1500, 5K and 4x400 relay on Saturday. The 1500 will start things off starting at 3:50 p.m.
