PAWLEYS ISLAND --- California Baptist University's women's golf team moved up three spots during the final round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge on Tuesday, as the Lancers finished 10th out of 20 teams.
The Lancers entered the final day needing to shave off five strokes from their team score in order to crack the top 10. CBU produced its best round of the three-day tournament with a 5-over-par 289-team score to secure the top-10 finish. The Lancers finished with a 27-over-par 879 team score to edge out Morehead State, Wofford College, Jacksonville State, and Georgetown.
"Our goal was to post our best round of the tourney for our third round today," said head coach Marc Machado. "We controlled our attitude and body language very nicely today. It was nice to see two freshmen in the lineup and the entire TEAM still fighting to the end, even when we didn't have a chance to win. Shows that this group has heart."
Campbell University went wire-to-wire to win the tournament with an 18-under-par 834 team score. UNCW snuck into second during the final round, climbing three spots with a tournament-best 8-under-par 276 team score on the day to finish with a 2-under-par 850 team score. Lipscomb closed out the podium in third with a 3-over-par 855 team score.
Hailey Loh kept her top spot as the top finisher for the Lancers with an even-par 71 on the day to finish T-25th with a 3-over-par 216. Sofia Chabon also produced an even-par round to move up a team-best 16 spots to place 36th with a 7-over-par 220. Samantha Dizon also moved up the leaderboard eight spots to place T-37th after signing an 8-over-par 221 total. Damini Law Ghanshyanim finished at T-54th with an 11-over-par 224, while Esther Lee ended her day with a 15-over-par 228 to place T-74th.
"I'm very proud of our final four holes today as a TEAM that we played at -1," added Machado. "Great to have our veterans Sofia Chabon and Hailey Loh show leadership this final round by both posting rounds of even par. Lots of solid stuff to build on for the future."
Erica Scutt of Austin Peay held onto her lead in the final round by one stroke with a 9-under-par 204. She narrowly edged out Tomita Arejola of Campbell, who shot a 6-under-par 65 on the day to finish with an 8-under-par 205 total.
The Lancers are back in action on Sept. 26-28 when they travel to Columbia, Missouri, to take on the Johnie Imus Invitational.
