NACOGDOCHES--- California Baptist University headed to Nacogdoches for the second part of their Texas road trip as they faced the Stephen F. Austin Lady Jacks. The Lancers and Lady Jacks faced off for the third time since SFA joined the Western Athletic Conference last season. The Lady Jacks won the previous two meetings in January, including a 79-64 meeting in Riverside. The Lancers flipped the script with a resounding win in Nacogdoches 82-74
The Lady Jacks entered the contest ranked seventh in the College Inside Mid-Major Women's Poll. The Lancers were on a three-game winning streak heading into the matchup with impressive wins over Seattle U, Grand Canyon, and at UT Arlington on Thursday night. The win helped CBU improve to 7-2 in the conference, tying them with SFA for second place. The loss for the Lady Jacks marks the first time they have lost multiple conference games since their 2019-2020 season.
In the first half, the Lancers put on a three-point shooting display, knocking down 11 on 65% shooting. CBU started the half with a 19-5 run and led the Lady Jacks 22-10 after the first period. The 12-point lead was the season's second-largest opening quarter deficit for SFA. Trinity San Antonio and Dorcas Wu led the scoring in the first half, combining for 27 points as they led the game 48-34 at the half. The 48 points by the Lancers were the most they have scored in a half this season and, consequently, the most SFA had given up all season.
The offense slowed down slightly in the second half for both teams as the Lancers got into foul trouble. The Lady Jacks were able to cut the lead to three with under four minutes to play. San Antonio, who was leading the Lancers with 15 points, fouled out with 9:52 to play in the fourth quarter. That's when Sila Finau stepped up and hit back-to-back buckets for CBU to extend the lead to eight with under two minutes to play, proving to be the daggers. The Lancers would go on to close out the Lady Jacks 82-74.
This marks just the second home conference loss since 2018 for the Lady Jacks, with the other coming last season to UTRGV. CBU shot 54% from the arc for the game on 13 makes. CBU had four players in double figures, with Sila Finau leading the way with 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists. The Lancer's 82 points are the most allowed by SFA all season long and the second-highest total for CBU in conference play.
Next, the Lancers will return home for a two-game stand that will start with the New Mexico State Aggies coming to Riverside on Thursday, February 2nd, at 11 a.m.
