WASHINGTON, UTAH – California Baptist University women's golf is bringing home the hardware from Utah after winning the Zupas Trailblazer Invitational. This marks the first official TEAM win since taking first in the Indiana State Spring Invite in March 2019.
"Our theme for this tournament was (Opportunity). This was an opportunity to prove to ourselves that all the hard work has been worth it", said Head Coach Marc Machado after the event's conclusion. "The TEAM definitely seized this opportunity, and I'm very proud of them for fighting this whole tourney despite the cold, wind, rain, and snow. Despite the tough weather conditions, they never gave up, and that showed when we were up 26 shots with 6-7 holes to play before play was officially canceled.
Hailey Loh was the Lancers' top finisher, earning T-2 overall with a 36-hole score of +4 (148). She was joined in the top 20 by three teammates. Samantha Dizon carded a +6 (150) to earn T-5, with Filipa Capelo competing as an individual for CBU, finishing T-10 with a +10 (154). Esther Lee rounded out the top 20 finishers with a T-17 finish and a score of +13 (157).
This is the fourth Division I win in program history, and it was hard-earned in brutal winter conditions. Officially, the win went down as a 36-hole tournament as unplayable conditions moved onto the course in the middle of the third round. The rain intensified throughout the day, eventually becoming freezing rain and snow covering the course in an icy layer unfit for golf.
The Lancers led by 26 strokes at the time the tournament was called but will be credited with a two-stroke victory over CSUN as the final results revert to the 36-hole score as that was the last round completed.
The Matadors finished their second round early on Tuesday morning, finishing with a +36 (612), behind CBU's total of +34 (610). Host Utah Tech will be credited with third place with a score of +39 (615). Tarleton State (+43/619), Utah Valley (+46/622), Weber State (+51/627), SFA (+59/635), Purdue Fort Wayne (+71/647), and Idaho State (+76/652) rounded out the finishing order.
Coach Machado added, "This is a big win for our program. Each and every win is so precious and needs to be celebrated. This is our fourth D-I TEAM win in program history, and I'm glad our seniors got to be a part of this."
CBU turns its sights towards the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational now, as Western Michigan will host the three-day tournament in Rio Verde, Arizona, February 24-26.
