LA JOLLA – California Baptist University men's golf is tied for fourth after an incredible first day at the UC San Diego Invitational, played at Torrey Pines North Course in La Jolla. The Lancers are knotted with Utah Tech at -17 (561) after 36 holes played. Division II powerhouse Oklahoma Christian leads the field at -20 (556), with another WAC foe, Seattle U, in second place at -19 (557), and CSUN rounding out the top three at -17 (559).
The team's scores of 8-under in round one, and 7-under in round two, rank T5 and T8, respectively, in terms of all-time single-round team scores. The total of 561 ranks as the second-best 36-hole sum in program history and the best in a Division I tournament.
The Lancers were led on day one by Joust individual champion Eeli Kujanpaa, who carded a 7-under 65, tied for the third-lowest single-round individual score in program history, and best ever at the Division I level. His two-round score of 135 (-9) puts him in a tie for second place in the event after Monday's action, and it also ranks T5 in the record books for two-round score totals.
Luke Bartram finished the day T10 in the field of 83, also etching his name into the CBU record books along the way. Bartram went 71 (-1), 67 (-5) on Monday, with the latter round putting him T10 all-time in CBU men's gold history. His two-round cumulative score of 138 also placed him T10 all-time in two-round totals in the records. In separate rounds, Bartram and Kujanpaa highlighted their days with eagles on the same par-five ninth.
Sean Citherley (72, 72) was even on the day to close out with a score of 142 to put him in T41 heading into the final round. John Hayes is T57 (72, 74) 2-over after 36 holes, and Ryan Fisher rounds out the scoring Lancers with a 3-over (75, 72) to finish day one T63.
CBU will close out the UC San Diego Invitational at the prestigious Torrey Pines on Tuesday morning, paired with players from UC Irvine, Utah State, and Hawaii. Tee times for the shotgun start are set at 7:30 a.m.
