PROVE, UTAH – California Baptist University men's golf battled cold and windy conditions on the final day of the 58th PING Cougar Classic, improving one spot from Friday's finish to claim 15th place with a team score of 20-over (884). Host BYU held off a charging Utah Valley to defend its home course against the Wolverines to claim the weekend title.
James Mackey was the top Lancer finisher, coming in T61 with a 5-over (220) final tally. He recovered from a slow start to the final round to finish with three birdies in the last five holes. Eeli Kujanpaa and Luke Bartram each carded Saturday lows for CBU at 1-over (73), finishing T66 and T68, respectively. John Hayes and Sean Citherlet closed Saturday, shooting 3-over (75) to exit the tournament in T68 and 90th place overall.
The men now shift focus on preparing for the upcoming Western Athletic Conference tournament. The contest will be held this year in Henderson, Nevada, April 28-30 at the Boulder Creek Golf Course. Due to the transition period, the team did not officially record a score on the same course last season. Still, Kujanpaa and Citherlet found it agreeable, finishing in the top 10 at T8 and T10, respectively.
