
Lancers Begin Play at WAC Men's Golf Championship

BOULDER CITY, NEV – The Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship began on Friday morning. The Lancers have some ground to make up after 18 holes, finishing the day T12 with UT Rio Grande Valley at 10-over par (298). Sam Houston is the leader in the clubhouse at 14-under (274), With NM State (-11, 277) and Grand Canyon (-8, 280) within striking distance. Aggie Garrison Smith leads the individual leaderboard by multiple strokes after turning in a round of 8-under par (64) in round one.
After day one, John Hayes leads California Baptist, the only CBU golfer to go under par on Friday and closing out the opening round T16. He posted a 1-under (71) by playing a consistent round, overcoming two bogies with a trio of birdies. He also successfully navigated the three most challenging holes by the numbers, 6-18-14, to a score of 1-under.
Eeli Kujanpaa heads up a group of three Lancers who finished the day spread throughout the ranks of the 40s. Kujanpaa closed out Friday T44 at 3-over. James Mackie carded a 4-over (75) but closed the day strong, shooting 1-under in the final six holes. Sean Citherlet started the day very strong, tying for the best front nine of the day at 3-under, but the back nine gave him extra trouble, knocking him around before finishing the round +4 (76). Luke Bartram rounds out the Lancer quintet in T56 after shooting +5 (77).
CBU and UTRGV will open the course tomorrow with the early tee times, starting at 7:00 a.m.
