BLAINE, WASH. – California Baptist University women's golf has competed in the Western Athletic Conference Championship Tournament before, but 2023 marks the first time they do so with the ability to claim the TEAM crown. They got off to a good start on Sunday, posting an 8-over par score of 296, putting them in a tie for second with Seattle U, just three strokes behind the day-one leaders, Sam Houston.
A season ago in Boulder City, Nevada, the squad posted the lowest TEAM score in the competition, 894, but was ineligible for the TEAM crown as a transitioning member. Hailey Loh, a member of that historic unit and this year's quintet, is pacing the Lancers again, cupping a team-high four birdies and shooting an even-par 72 to close day one in a two-way tie for third.

Damini Law Ghanshyani led early, going 1-under on the front nine before finishing 1-over (73) to end the opening round in a five-way tie for fifth. Sofia Chabon finished Sunday's round in the top-15 at T12 with a final score of 3-over (75).

Samantha Dizon (76) and Haruka Shintani (78) ended day one outside of the top 20 at T22 and T33, respectively, but are primed for a resurgent round two on Monday.
The Lancers earned their spot among the top in part by playing smart. CBU has played the two most challenging holes on the course statistically, numbers four and sixteen, better than any other TEAM so far. The Lancers were the only team not to record a bogey on number four, highlighted by Sofia Chabon carding the only birdie of the round on that hole. CBU shot just 2-over on those holes, one shot better than day one leader's Sam Houston.
The second round of the WAC Women's Championship begins at 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning, with tee times stretching till 11:00 a.m.
